- Toxicity Summary: The toxicologically active substance in metaldehyde intoxication is mainly the degradation product acetaldehyde; other toxic products are probably also formed. Acetaldehyde acts as a releasing factor for 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NA). It also competitively inhibits biogenic amine oxidation which, in turn, decreases 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), a metabolite of 5-HT by competitively inhibiting 5-HT-oxidation. Acetaldehyde also increases monoamine oxidase activity and decreases central serotonin levels. (L1782) Source: Toxin and Toxin Target Database (T3DB)
- Environmental Bioconcentration: An estimated BCF of 3.2 was calculated for metaldehyde(SRC), using a log Kow of 0.12(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
- Environmental Fate: TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), a measured Koc value of 240(2) indicates that metaldehyde is expected to have moderate mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of metaldehyde from moist soil surfaces is expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 5.2X10-5 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure, 5.0X10-2 mm Hg(2), and water solubility, 2.22X10+2 mg/L(2). Metaldehyde is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon its vapor pressure(2). The results of a laboratory volatility study suggest that volatilization losses from soil surfaces will be minor(3). In a field study, 6% metaldehyde pellets were broadcast at the rate of 4 kg product/ha in a rice paddy ecosystem(4). Paddy soil samples collected 3 to 14 days after application had metaldehyde residue concentrations ranging from 0.053 to 0.127 mg/kg, reaching a peak at 0.127 mg/kg 14 days after application(4). Metaldehyde residue was below the minimum detection limit of 0.016 mg/kg 22 days after application(4). A reported half-life of approximately 2 months for metaldehyde in soil(3) suggests that biodegradation is not an important environ Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
- Environmental Fate: AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), a measured Koc value of 240(2) indicates that metaldehyde is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 5.2X10-5 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure, 5.0X10-2 mm Hg(2), and water solubility, 2.22X10+2 mg/L(2). Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(3), volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 26 hours and 12 days, respectively(SRC). In a field study, 6% metaldehyde pellets were broadcast at the rate of 4 kg product/ha in a rice paddy ecosystem(4). Paddy water samples collected 1 to 3 days after application had metaldehyde residue concentrations of 1.58 to 1.47 mg/L(4). Residues could be detected only up to 9 days after application, with its degradation pattern following pseudo first-order kinetics showing a half-life of 0.27 days(4). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF of 3.2(SRC), from its log Kow(2) and a regression-derived equation(6), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low. - Environmental Fate: ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), metaldehyde, which has a vapor pressure of 5.0X10-2 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase metaldehyde is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 13 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 2.9X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Metaldehyde does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
