  • Environmental Bioconcentration: An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated in fish for 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of 1.14(1) and a regression-derived equation(1). According to a classification scheme(2), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
  • Environmental Fate: TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 10(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 6.4X10-11 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) derived from its vapor pressure, 3.08X10-4 mm Hg(3), and water solubility, 1.92X10+5 mg/L(4). Volatilization from dry soil surfaces may not be an important fate process based upon its vapor pressure(SRC). Using the OECD-302B method (Zahn-Wellens/EMPA test for inherent biodegradability), 98% of initial 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol was degraded over a 19-day incubation period which classified the compound as inherently biodegradable(5). • Environmental Fate: AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 10(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 6.4X10-11 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure, 3.08X10-4 mm Hg(4), and water solubility, 9.2X10+5 mg/L(5). According to a classification scheme(6), an estimated BCF of 3(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of 1.14(2) and a regression-derived equation(2), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). 1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions(3). Using the method OECD-111, <1% of initial 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol hydrolyzed under acidic, neutral or basic conditions after a 5-day period at 50 °C(7). Using the OECD-302B method (Zahn-Wellens/EMPA test for inherent biodegradability), 98% of initial 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol was degraded over a 19-day incubation period which classified Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
  • Environmental Fate: ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, which has a vapor pressure of 3.08X10-4 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 18 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 2.1X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Particulate-phase 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol may be removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC). 1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and, therefore, is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
