  • Toxicity Summary: IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Resorcinol is a white crystalline compound with a faint odor and bitter-sweet taste. It exists in at least two crystalline modifications. Crystalline resorcinol turns pale red in the presence of light and air and is hygroscopic. It is miscible in water. It is used in tanning, photography; manufacture of resins, resin adhesives, hexylresorcinol, p-aminosalicylic acid, explosives, dyes, tires, rubber products; in cosmetics; dyeing and printing textiles; and as a reagent for zinc. It is not registered for current pesticide use in the U.S., but approved pesticide uses may change periodically and so federal, state and local authorities must be consulted for currently approved uses. Resorcinol is also a medication, used as an antifungal, antibacterial, mildly keratolytic and local irritant agent. It is a pharmaceutical agent used topically in dermatological treatments such as acne and related skin conditions. It could also be used in combination with the other acne treatment agents such as sulphur. HUMAN EXPOSURE AND TOXICITY: An application of 3-25% solution of resorcinol to skin may cause redness, itching, dermatitis, edema or corrosion of affected area. • Environmental Bioconcentration: An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated in fish for resorcinol(SRC), using a log Kow of 0.80(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
  • Environmental Fate: TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), a Koc value of 10.36(2) indicates that resorcinol is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). The pKa1 of resorcinol is 9.30(3), indicating that this compound will exist partially in the anion form in the environment and anions generally do not adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(4). Volatilization of resorcinol from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 9.9X10-11 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), based upon its vapor pressure, 4.89X10-4 mm Hg(5), and water solubility, 7.17X10+5 mg/L(6). Resorcinol is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon its vapor pressure(5). Utilizing the Japanese MITI test, 100% of the Theoretical BOD was reached in 2 weeks(7) indicating that biodegradation is an important environmental fate process in soil(SRC). • Environmental Fate: AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), a Koc value of 10.36(2) indicates that resorcinol is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 9.9X10-11 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure, 4.89X10-4 mm Hg(4), and water solubility, 7.17X10+5 mg/L(5). As a class, phenols react relatively rapidly in sunlit natural water via reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and peroxy radicals(6). According to a classification scheme(7), an estimated BCF of 3(SRC), from its log Kow of 0.80(8) and a regression-derived equation(9), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Utilizing the Japanese MITI test, 100% of the Theoretical BOD was reached in 2 weeks(10) indicating that biodegradation is an important environmental fate process in water(SRC). Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
  • Environmental Fate: ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), resorcinol, which has a vapor pressure of 4.89X10-4 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase resorcinol is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 1 hour(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 2.0X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). The vapor-phase reaction of resorcinol with nitrate radicals may be an important atmospheric removal process in urban areas at night(4). Particulate-phase resorcinol may be removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC). As a class, phenols react relatively rapidly in sunlit natural water via reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and peroxy radicals(5). Therefore, resorcinol may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC). Source: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)

How CAS 108-46-3 is used on this site

CAS 108-46-3 is the Chemical Abstracts Service identifier used to pin this page to a specific substance. In the current dataset, 1 EU annex record shares this identifier, which helps you cross-check whether the same substance appears under one regulatory context or several.

Use this page when a supplier specification, SDS or raw-material dossier gives you CAS 108-46-3 and you need to see every linked Annex II–VI record in one place. The entry cards above are the quickest route to concentration limits, warnings, annex placement and product-type conditions.

Frequently asked questions

A substance identified by CAS 108-46-3 may appear in multiple EU cosmetic regulation annexes when it is subject to different conditions in different contexts. For example, a substance might be restricted under Annex III with specific conditions, and the same CAS might also appear in Annex IV as an approved colorant under separate entry conditions. Each entry must be reviewed individually.

Cross-reference the CAS number against your raw material specification sheets and CoA documents. When a CAS appears in Annex II, verify absence. When it appears in Annex III, verify that concentration limits and product type conditions are met in your formulation. All annex entries sharing this CAS number are listed above.

A CAS number is assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service (USA) and is globally recognised. An EC number is a European Commission identifier from inventories such as EINECS, ELINCS or the NLP list. Both identifiers may appear in EU cosmetic annex entries. Some substances have both, some have only one, and some older entries may have neither.

The INCI Checker accepts ingredient names, CAS numbers and EC numbers. Check this CAS number directly, then verify the result against supplier specification sheets and every linked annex condition.
