Basic Skincare Rules: 10 Steps to Healthy Skin

The health of our skin isn’t just about skincare products or regular visits to a cosmetologist. First and foremost, it’s about the daily habits that are part of our lives. There’s a huge amount of information about skincare available today, but it’s not always useful specifically for you.

If you’re looking for the answer to the question “What are the basic hygiene rules for skincare?”, you’re in the right place! Here I share the main skincare rules — 10 essential tips that will help you improve your skincare routine. Read through them, check which ones you’re already using every day, and discover new ones for yourself!

Rule 1. Remember consistency

The order in which you apply skincare products is the very first step to healthy, well-nourished skin. The most important thing to know is this: results won’t appear the next day. Your skin needs time because the active ingredients in cosmetics work gradually. Give it a few days — or sometimes even weeks — and remember that skincare must be done every single day.

Rule 2. Determine your skin type

The main criterion when choosing skincare is not the brand or price, but the product’s purpose and how well it matches your skin type. Brands create products for different skin types: dry, normal, combination, oily, sensitive, and problem-prone. Sometimes a product works for all types, but to make a smart choice, it’s important to understand the ingredients and know which active components you actually need.

Rule 3. Adjust your routine according to the season

Using the same skincare routine all year round is one of the most common mistakes. Skincare products should match the season and your skin’s current needs. In summer, focus on cleansing, moisturizing, and daily UV protection. In winter, your skin needs richer, more nourishing care to protect it from cold, frost, and wind — so choose dense textures with highly concentrated formulas.

Don’t forget to review your routine at least twice a year (in spring and autumn). Pay special attention to your serum and cream — these two products have the greatest impact on your skin’s condition.

Rule 4. Don’t overload your skin

Give your skin exactly what it needs! Don’t buy everything the store consultant recommends, and especially not every trendy product you see on social media. Using too many products is not a guarantee of better results — more often it’s a direct path to irritation. Choose quality skincare and always check other users’ reviews.

Don’t buy 10 new products at once. Start with a basic routine and gradually add others for better results. Trust me, your skin won’t thank you if you suddenly load it with dozens of new gels, toners, and creams.

Rule 5. Take care of exfoliation

Your skin is constantly renewing itself, so it’s important to regularly remove dead epidermal cells. This not only eliminates dullness and roughness, but also prevents clogged pores and inflammation. Plus, regular exfoliation makes the active ingredients in your skincare work noticeably better and more effectively.

Rule 6. Support your skin’s microbiome and pH balance

The normal pH level of the skin is around 4.7. At this level, the balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria is maintained, allowing the skin to resist external irritants on its own. However, daily contact with tap water or regular soap can disrupt this balance, raising the skin’s pH to an alkaline level (above 7). This can lead to redness, sensitivity, dryness, or flaking.

To prevent this, choose skincare products with an “acidic” pH (between 4 and 6). Such products neutralize the effect of alkaline water, support the skin’s natural microbiome, and help keep your skin healthy and calm.

Rule 7. Always remove your makeup

Always take off your makeup! Even when you’re so tired you feel like you’re falling asleep standing up and the temptation to “just lie down for a minute” wins. Why is this so important?

During the day, dust, sebum, and leftover makeup and skincare products accumulate on your skin. Without thorough cleansing before bed, this creates the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply. The result? Clogged pores, blackheads, inflammation, and breakouts. Plus, night is when the skin actively repairs itself — and makeup gets in the way.

Remember: basic facial care starts with makeup removal. It doesn’t take much time, but it gives you healthy, clean, and glowing skin in the morning. If you have zero energy left, at least keep gentle cleansing pads nearby — it’s better than nothing. But going to bed with makeup on is a hard no.

Rule 8. Don’t forget your neck and décolleté

The neck and décolleté area are often overlooked, yet they’re usually the first to reveal our age. The skin here is thinner, has fewer sebaceous glands, loses moisture faster, and is more prone to loss of elasticity, pigmentation, and wrinkles.

So during your daily facial routine, take care of these two areas too: cleanse, tone, and moisturize them the same way you do your face. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen — UV rays are the main cause of age spots and wrinkles in these zones.

Rule 9. Always use SPF products

SPF products shouldn’t be reserved only for beach vacations — they should be part of your daily life, even on cloudy or cold days! UV rays can penetrate clouds, glass, and the atmosphere regardless of the season. They trigger photoaging, cause pigmentation, loss of firmness, dryness, and over time can lead to serious skin health issues.

Think of SPF as a basic necessity you can’t skip. If you make sun protection a non-negotiable part of your daily ritual, in 10–15 years your skin will thank you: fewer wrinkles, fewer age spots, and less damage overall.

Rule 10. Maintain your body’s water balance

No cream can properly hydrate your skin if your body simply doesn’t have enough water. Water balance is the foundation of healthy, firm, and elastic skin. When you don’t drink enough, your skin loses tone faster, looks dull, becomes dry, and is more prone to irritation.

Carbonated drinks, coffee, and sweet juices don’t replace plain water — in fact, they often dehydrate you even more. So the best thing you can do for your skin starting today is to drink more water: at least 30 ml per 1 kg of body weight per day.

The health of your skin is in your daily habits! It’s your regular actions that create the results you’ll thank yourself for later (or regret). Remember, your skincare routine doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to be mindful.

If you’re still looking for answers on how to care for your skin properly, come back to this list as your personal checklist. Listen to your skin, adapt your routine to its needs, and remember: even the best advice only works with consistency.
